In general, photos must be relevant to the life and interests of the Church in Asia. We classify these into two categories:

  • News photos. These are photos of news events taken as they occur and sent to us quickly.
  • Other photos. These include:
    1. feature photos depicting the life of the Church and the people in Asia such as activities, communities, buildings etc, and
    2. portrait shots of Church people and others in Asia.

Photo Captions >>

Nearly all UPS captions follow a two-sentence formula:

The first sentence of the caption describes what the photo shows, in the present tense, and states where (place) and when (date) the photo was made.

The second sentence of the caption gives background on the news event or describes why the photo is significant.

Please make sure that you have:

  • Full name, title and position of each significant person in the photo
  • Proper name of event or activity
  • Brief description of what is happening in the photo
  • Place where the photo was taken
  • Date when the photo was taken

This is an example of the standard UPS caption:

Displaced children play at an evacuation center in Datu Piang, Maguindanao, the Philippines, on Oct. 5. At least 41,000 people were displaced due to fighting between Philippine government troops and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels.

Terms and Conditions >>
  • The UPS is committed to working with photographers and helping them provide photos that are insightful and visually stimulating.
  • Every commentary and interview submitted to UCA News by an individual or reporter must be accompanied by a portrait shot of the commentary writer or the person interviewed. Such photos will be uploaded to the UPS database but treated as gratis and credited as a courtesy photo.
  • Photos submitted by photographers will be selected by UPS editors to ensure technical and content quality.
  • UPS editors maintain the right to restore damaged digital images and remove blemishes, scratches and other unwanted elements, and rebalance colors of submitted digital images to match those of an original.
Payment >>
  • Payment is 50 percent of the income generated from downloads by users. Click here for user rates. Please note that there are users who may enjoy discounts.
  • Photographers retain the rights to their photos.
  • Photographers, whose photos have been downloaded by users, receive payment every month together with details of each download.
Note:

Effective March 1, 2006, payment will not be offered for UPS photos used in UCA News productions, including the UCA News website and ASIA FOCUS, because UPS belongs to and is part of UCA News.

While UPS photos used by UCA News are no longer paid, the photographer will be credited whenever possible. The UCAN Daily Service (UDS) on the Internet serves as a platform to promote UPS photos. Selected low-resolution images or photos are attached to UDS stories to inform users about photos accompanying each story. Users wishing to download photos must register with and log in to the UPS.

This revised policy is valid for all UPS photos. Photographers whose photos were submitted before March 1, 2006, should contact ups@ucanews.com if they wish to withdraw any photos from the UPS.
